The Role of Institutions in Increasing Inter-Community Co-operation at the Local Level

The Kosovo Local Government Institute (KLGI) organized a workshop on “The Role of Institutions in Increasing Inter-Community Co-operation at the Local Level”. This workshop aimed to meet the challenges and efforts to promote and strengthen inter-community cooperation in the function of good governance and local economic development.

Participants in the workshops were representatives of all municipalities of the Republic of Kosovo, Ministry of Local Government Administration and Civil Society.

The purpose of the workshop was to identify the challenges and coordinate the common agenda in order to strengthen the capacity of local actors to take concrete actions towards the implementation of policies for the benefit of all citizens. First and foremost, municipalities need to be highly committed to respecting community rights and advancing them in all areas, enhancing joint activities.

Inter-communal cooperation is an important way for municipalities to provide efficient services and in the function of local economic development. At the same time, municipalities should be able to find ways to overcome challenges and to use legal mechanisms to strengthen co-operation.

The KLGI Institute has issued a practical guide that clarifies the areas of cooperation and the advantages of this process. It has continuously addressed the challenges that this process has had and the lack of a cohesive approach to identifying areas of cooperation and undertaking legal steps.

This activity was carried out within the framework of the project “Support to Stronger and Sustainable Municipalities (SSSM)” funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of Norway in Kosovo.
