The Institute for Local Democracy and Information (LGiU) and the Kosovo Local Government Institute (KLGI) have signed a memorandum of understanding for a strategic partnership on policy analysis, capacity building, knowledge exchange and research on good governance and decentralisation.
This announcement comes as a result of a series of visits to central and local institutions in Kosovo and Macedonia, aimed at understanding the achievements and challenges of local government in the region. The trip included visits to Macedonia, Kosovo and Albania, meeting government officials and mayors of cities and towns in each country. All three states have decentralisation programmes, including, in the case of Albania, the completion of a programme to reorganise local government.
Further steps in the partnership include launching a paper on the future of local governance in Kosovo, together with a bid for EU funding. The paper will be presented at an event in Prishtina on 6 July.
