The Kosovo Local Government Institute (KLGI) organised a workshop on ‘The Organisation and Functioning of Mandatory Committees’, which aimed to familiarise participants with the legal framework for the organisation and functioning of Committees in municipalities and to identify the challenges in organising and running the Mandatory Committees.

Participants in the workshop were the Chairpersons of Municipal Assemblies and representatives of the Ministry of Local Government Administration and civil society.

The meeting aimed to provide practical knowledge of their role and duties in the Mandatory Committees, focusing on concrete examples, and of representing citizens' interests in decision-making processes, as well as to familiarise participants with the legal frameworks and the rules of procedure of the municipal assembly.

Municipal Assemblies need auxiliary bodies in order to examine in detail the municipality's policies, strategic documents, decisions and regulations, on the one hand, and to oversee the activities of the executive branch, on the other.

The purpose of the mandatory committees is to increase the efficiency of Municipal Assemblies, to examine more thoroughly the municipal acts relating to the political and economic aspects of the municipality, and to address the impact of municipal acts on the communities living in the municipality concerned.

The Mandatory Committees of the Municipal Assembly have two fundamental roles: to review municipal acts in the respective fields for which they are established, and to oversee the work of the directorates in those fields.

The KLGI Institute continues to work, through educational programmes, to build the capacities of the country's municipalities.

This activity was carried out within the project ‘Support for Stronger and More Sustainable Municipalities (SSSM)’, funded by the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Kosovo.
