The Kosovo Local Government Institute (KLGI) organised a workshop on the topic “Changes in local self-government legislation in Kosovo”. Participants were the Chairs of the Councillor Groups of the Municipal Assemblies in the Prishtina Region (Prishtina, Glogoc, Podujeva, Lipjan, Fushë Kosova, Graçanica).

The aim of the meeting was to discuss the changes to the Law on Local Self-Government and to familiarise new members with the basic legislation on local governance in the Republic of Kosovo. In 2021 the Ministry of Local Government Administration (MLGA) made changes to the Law on Local Self-Government that aim to advance the functioning of local government in the Republic of Kosovo.

The proper functioning of local government is essential for delivering efficient and effective services to citizens and for strengthening democracy and citizen participation in decision-making processes. The efficient functioning of municipalities is a precondition for sustainable development, as local institutions are the first and closest point of contact where citizens receive the services they need.

This meeting was part of the KLGI Institute’s support to municipalities and central institutions in drafting new policies in the field of local governance. The meeting will continue tomorrow with a discussion of the new policies drafted in the field of local governance.

The KLGI Institute is dedicated to analyses and studies that contribute to effective local governance practices in Kosovo. Through its educational programmes, KLGI also works on building the capacities of the country’s municipalities.

The activity was carried out within the framework of the programme ‘Dialogue for European Municipalities’ (DEM), supported by the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Kosovo.
