Since 2014, the Kosovo Local Government Institute has presented an annual Local Democracy Award in recognition of individuals for their dedication and outstanding contribution in the field of local governance and democracy. This year, the award has been presented to Mr Arben Ahmeti, author and host of the programme ‘Zyra e Ankesave’ (‘The Complaints Office’) on RTV Dukagjini.

Developments in municipalities show that citizens’ voices are not heard enough, consultations are inadequate and their complaints are often ignored. This weakens citizens’ trust in institutions. However, this has not stopped Mr Ahmeti from committing himself directly, on a daily basis, to encouraging change and development in the municipalities of the Republic of Kosovo.

Through the programme he hosts, Mr Arben Ahmeti has continuously served to address citizens’ problems, having a positive effect on neighbourhoods, villages and towns across the Republic of Kosovo. Ahmeti has shown inexhaustible dedication in supporting initiatives that affect citizens’ daily lives through direct involvement in specific issues. Ahmeti is an outstanding example of involving and consulting citizens in municipal decision-making.

The award was dedicated to Mr Arben Ahmeti for his advanced contribution to innovation, increasing accountability and transparency, strengthening local democracy and building a stronger connection between citizens and their municipality. On this basis, the Kosovo Local Government Institute expresses its gratitude and high esteem for Mr Arben Ahmeti.

We hope that the Local Democracy Award, and other awards like it, will encourage and foster positive change in Kosovo.
